Affirming Plymouth State University’s (PSU) continuing evolution as a leader in educator training, and its vision to support culturally-sustaining educational learners, leaders and activists, PSU’s Holmes Center for School Partnerships and Educator Preparation recently announced a partnership with the Gay, Lesbian & Straight Educator Network (GLSEN) of New Hampshire. The partnership is one of several already forged by the Holmes Center this year, and will provide GLSEN with dedicated space and resources for educator training and development, and other chapter events.

GLSEN New Hampshire works to ensure that New Hampshire’s K-12 schools are safe for all children, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity or expression. GLSEN New Hampshire is one of 30 chapters of the national GLSEN network and is run entirely by volunteers.

The Holmes Center’s goal is to optimize resources based on evidence of sustaining impact on the lives of children and youth around persistent educational problems and dilemmas. The Center forges professional development school (PDS) partnerships with New Hampshire schools that support co-teaching between PSU teaching interns and experienced mentor teachers that lead to PreK-12 teacher certification in New Hampshire.

“GLSEN’s mission to educate and support school communities in an effort to eliminate bullying and foster learning environments that are supportive of all students meshes beautifully with the mission of the Holmes Center,” said Mary Earick, Holmes Center Director. “We are honored to partner with GLSEN New Hampshire, and to bring its important programming to our PDS partners and educators throughout the state to help them become ‘Safe Spaces’ for all students.”

GLSEN New Hampshire will host a summer ‘Educator Magnet Training’ workshop at Plymouth State University on Tuesday, July 10. The session will provide information on current issues concerning LGBTQ+ students; bullying and its impact on mental health and learning, and tactics to stop bullying in the classroom; and guidelines and tools for creating a ‘Safe Space.’

“GLSEN offers a critically needed voice to LGBTQ students in our schools, and resources to our educators in those schools,” said Earick. “The Holmes Center will be working with GLSEN to engage local schools and school districts in this important work.”

Following a comprehensive review of its food service strategy and on-campus dining experience, and after an extensive search process, Plymouth State University (PSU) announced the selection of Chartwells Higher Education Dining Services as its new dining service and catering provider.

Beginning this fall, Chartwells will transform PSU’s on-campus dining experience and catering services, creating a premier program that emphasizes quality, made-to-order food, menu customization and variety, sustainability practices and dining innovations.

“The on-campus dining experience is a major component of student life,” said Amanda Grazioso, PSU’s director of residential life and dining services. “Far from offering the traditional dining hall service, Chartwells will take the PSU dining experience to a new level of excellence with more variety, greater choice in menu options, locally-sourced ingredients, and more.”

Students will experience several enhancements when they return to campus this fall, including expanded late-night hours in Prospect Hall. They will also see a greater presence of healthy foods, such as more offerings on the salad bar, as well as an extensive allergen program that will help students make safe and healthy dining choices through enhanced labeling. In addition, students will be able to take part in Chartwells’ interactive Student Choice program, where they may choose the menus and food offerings they would like to see in dining.

Lisa McEuen, CEO of Chartwells Higher Education says, “We are excited to create a customized dining experience for the Plymouth State community. Our goal is to be a true campus partner that will integrate students into the dining program by giving them the opportunity to take part in the creation of our plan.”

As part of the transition, Chartwells intends to offer all current dining service employees, including students, the opportunity to join the Chartwells team and be part of their mission and vision to deliver great food service at PSU. More information regarding the employee transition process will be shared in coming weeks.

Nelson Defigueiredo, divisional president, Chartwells Higher Education says, “We look forward to welcoming current PSU associates to the Chartwells family. We are proud to offer an inclusive culture that empowers associates to openly and effectively communicate with their managers and to one another.”

Chartwells is committed to supporting the PSU and greater Plymouth communities with programs to address food insecurity and by sourcing products locally from New Hampshire farms and other local providers.

More than 4,500 undergraduate and graduate students begin classes today at Plymouth State University (PSU). The class of 2022 is the first to be fully recruited with PSU’s integrated clusters model, based on an integrated liberal arts education that gives students the ability to think critically and link across multiple disciplines. First-year students moved into on-campus residence halls August 23 and participated in orientation activities this past weekend; returning students arrived on August 26.

“As we begin the new school year, we look forward to continuing our tradition of academic excellence at Plymouth State University. We are pleased to welcome our first-year and transfer students to campus, and we are excited to see thousands of familiar faces returning,” said Donald L. Birx, Ph.D., president, Plymouth State University. “Our faculty and staff are ready to welcome all of our students and challenge them both in and out of the classroom, helping them to develop critical-thinking and problem-solving skills so they can become the tomorrow changers we know they can be.”

PSU welcomed more than 1,350 first-year and transfer students with the start of classes. New students are from 27 states across the country, including Alaska, and five countries, which include Austria, Canada, Cameroon, Mexico and Sweden. With more than 550 new students from the Granite State, Manchester, Nashua, Concord, Laconia are the most represented cities at towns in the class. More than 200 first-year students are undeclared, while more than 90 first-year students have already declared a criminal justice major.

“We saw the excitement and dedication of this incoming class almost a year ago, as students made their decision to join the Plymouth State University family,” said Jason Moran, dean of enrollment management, Plymouth State University. “All first year students will begin their integrated clusters learning by participating in a first-year seminar course that will focus on solving a wicked problem and completing an interdisciplinary project experience.”

Plymouth State University to Host Inaugural ‘Governor’s Cup’ FIRST® NH Robotics Competition

New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu, FIRST® New Hampshire, the University System of New Hampshire (USNH), the Community College System of New Hampshire (CCSNH), Eversource, BAE Systems and Fidelity have partnered to present ‘The Governor’s Cup’ – an off-season robotics competition for the state’s high school FIRST Robotics Competition teams. Hosted by Plymouth State University (PSU) in its Active Living, Learning, and Wellness (ALLWell) North complex, the event will take place Saturday, October 13, 2018.

In addition to providing the state’s high school robotics teams an opportunity to compete prior to the official FIRST Robotics Competition season, up to 50 high school seniors will have the opportunity to earn one-semester scholarships to New Hampshire’s public institutions, including the University of New Hampshire (Durham and Manchester), Keene State College, Plymouth State University and New Hampshire’s community colleges. In addition, five seniors will be awarded $2,000 scholarships, underwritten in part by Eversource.

“A crucial part of shaping the workforce of the future is ensuring that every child in the Granite State regardless of zip code has an opportunity to pursue a career in the STEM fields,” said Governor Chris Sununu. “As Governor, expanding access to STEM programs for students has been a top priority of mine. Last year we invested nearly $1 million in the innovative Robotics Education Fund. This year we have teamed up with the University System, Community College System, and FIRST to create the Governor’s Cup. The Governor’s Cup is a truly unique opportunity for students from all across our state to further develop their STEM skills in a fun and competitive environment.”

More than 20 FIRST Robotics Competition teams from high schools across the state are expected to participate in this inaugural event. The FIRST Robotics Competition is a program that challenges high school students – working with professional Mentors – to design and build a robot to contend in competitions that measure the effectiveness of each robot, the power of collaboration, and the determination of students.

“This is a total home run for Granite State students,” said Dean Kamen, founder of FIRST.  “I applaud Governor Sununu, the Universities, and Community Colleges for their future-forward commitment to the state’s young people. Now, more than ever, it is essential that we inspire young people to engage in STEM. Here in New Hampshire, with our population aging and more of our high school graduates leaving the state, our businesses are challenged to find the skilled workers they need. The Governor’s Cup should stand as a challenge to Governors across the country to prepare and ensure promising and rewarding futures for the next generation of innovators, inventors, and creative problem solvers.”

FIRST POWER UPSM, the 2018 FIRST Robotics Competition game, finds teams trapped in an 8-bit video game. Each three-team alliance has three ways to help defeat the boss: Tipping the scale or alliance’s switch in their favor to earn points; exchanging power cubes for power ups (force, boost, and levitate) to gain a timed temporary advantage during the match; and climbing the scale tower to face the boss. The alliance with the highest score at the end of the match, which includes autonomous and teleoperated periods, defeats the boss and wins the game.

“We are thrilled to host The Governor’s Cup at Plymouth State University, and look forward to welcoming students, mentors, teachers and parents from throughout the state to campus,” said Plymouth State University President Donald L. Birx, Ph.D. “As a university, we value the FIRST Robotics mission to inspire students to collaborate, innovate and acquire skills to help them become leaders. As an engineer, I am excited to see how the students tackle the challenges of the competition – it will be a fun event!”
To be eligible for the scholarships, seniors must have participated in the 2017-2018 FIRST Robotics Competition season, and must be participating in the 2018-2019 season, including The Governor’s Cup competition. The scholarships will be awarded to seniors on the three teams of the winning alliance and will be equal to one semester of free tuition at any of New Hampshire’s public colleges, universities and community colleges. The additional $2,000 scholarships will be awarded to five participating seniors who are nominated by their coaches and mentors for embodying the values and spirit of FIRST.

“Supporting workforce development efforts that will help power our economy and enrich our communities for years to come is one of the many ways that Eversource is working to power the possible for New Hampshire,” said Eversource New Hampshire President Bill Quinlan. “FIRST Robotics is a fun and exciting way to engage our next generation of workers in developing critical teamwork and STEM skills, and we’re proud to join this partnership to help empower these students in becoming future leaders of our state.”

The Governor’s Cup FIRST Robotics Competition will take place Saturday, October 13, 2018, 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM at Plymouth State University’s ALLWell North Complex. The public is invited to attend. Parking and entrance to the event are free of charge. For more information about The Governor’s Cup, visit www.firstnh.org/governors-cup. Plymouth State Launches New Program for High School Students to Take College Classes

Plymouth State University (PSU) has created a new program to help high school students expand their coursework and challenge themselves at the collegiate level and deepen their educational experiences. Starting with the Spring 2019 semester, juniors and seniors can take PSU classes at half the cost of regular tuition, and earn college credits while still in high school.

Students in the Accelerated High School program will have the opportunity to take any PSU class – on campus or online, depending on where the class meets. Classes will be taught by PSU faculty members, and students will be held to the same standards and expectations as their college-age classmates.

“The Accelerated High School Student program is just the latest way that Plymouth State is helping students develop the critical-thinking and problem-solving skills they’ll need to tackle future challenges,” said Jason Moran, dean of enrollment management, Plymouth State University. “This new program allows high school students to experience college-level coursework and expectations alongside Plymouth State ungraduated students, and prepare for the next step in their education journey.”

Current high school juniors and seniors who maintain a “B” grade point average and are enrolled in college preparatory classes are eligible to apply for the Accelerated High School Student program. Students may apply to participate in any PSU class as long as they meet all pre-requisites for the specific course.

To apply, students must identify the specific course in which they would like to enroll, complete and submit an application, a letter of recommendation from a school guidance counselor detailing the student’s academic qualifications and relevance of the PSU course to the high school program, and his or her official high school transcript to the Assistant Director of Admissions for New Hampshire. Once the application is reviewed, the PSU Admissions Office will notify students and help those who qualify enroll in the approved classes.

For more information about the PSU Accelerated High School Student program, the application process and available courses, contact Ryan Patten, Senior Assistant Director of Admissions, at rwpatten1@plymouth.edu or 800-842-6900. The Admissions Office is now accepting applications from high school juniors and seniors for the Spring 2019 semester.

Wellesley College professor emeritus Nicholas Rodenhouse, Ph.D. will discuss the connection between climate change and mass extinction

The Plymouth State University Saul O Sidore Lecture Series continues its 2018-2019 schedule on Tuesday, November 27, with, “Looking Back, Peering Ahead—From the Middle of Colliding, Imperceptible Events: Climate Change and Mass Extinction,” by Nicholas L. Rodenhouse, Ph.D., professor emeritus at Wellesley College, Wellesley, MA.

Climate change will affect multiple dimensions of human life. While the impacts will be felt by all, human challenges will be faced most by the youngest generations. The 2018-2019 Sidore Lecture Series will examine questions such as: How does climate information and disinformation affect needed lifestyle changes? What is technology’s role? What are the challenges and possibilities in the realm of education? What underlying aspects of the human psyche affect how people grapple with the issue?  The series will examine these issues from local, national, and global perspectives.

This third lecture in the Sidore series will explore links between climate change and species extinctions. While the connection may seem obvious, climate change in the Anthropocene may not be what it seems, and the relevant changes may be imperceptible to humans. Dr. Rodenhouse will discuss how the concepts of climate and extinction shape and constrain how people relate climate change to mass extinction, and use local data to address whether climate change is driving some species along the path to extinction.

“Looking Back, Peering Ahead—From the Middle of Colliding, Imperceptible Events: Climate Change and Mass Extinction,” will take place Tuesday, November 27, at 7:00 p.m. at the Silver Center for the Arts on Main Street, Plymouth, in Smith Recital Hall. Lectures are free and open to the public, but reservations are recommended. For reservations or to arrange special accommodations, call (603) 535-ARTS.

Plymouth State University Launches New Exchange Program with University in China

Plymouth State University (PSU) recently launched a new program that will bring students from Henan Normal University (HNU) in Xinxiang City, in the northern Henan Province of China, to study at PSU as part of an international exchange program. The new partnership was finalized during a recent visit to Plymouth by a delegation from HNU who met with PSU officials and faculty and toured the campus.

“This new international exchange program with Henan Normal University will not only bring students with a strong desire to learn and succeed to PSU’s campus, it will also bring students with different life experiences,” said Donald L. Birx, Ph.D., President, Plymouth State University. “Ensuring that our student body reflects a variety of cultures, experiences and points of view is extremely important to preparing our students to succeed in a globalized world. We look forward to welcoming the first HNU students to campus to experience Panther life while we continue to collaborate to expand opportunities for all of our students.”

Starting in fall 2019, qualified HNU students will have the opportunity to study at PSU for one or two semesters. These students will take PSU courses within select bachelor’s degree programs as part of their HNU degree courses of study. Students will live on campus to experience campus life in-and-out of the classroom and will have opportunities to explore the region.

“Our students will greatly benefit from studying at Plymouth State University, with its rigorous course work and excellent faculty,” said Mr. Li Xueshan, Vice President, Henan Normal University. “We hope to host PSU students and faculty in the future to further our cultural exchange and deepen our relationship.”

During the recent two-day visit, members of the Henan Normal University delegation met with Plymouth State deans, staff and professors to discuss developing a future “2 + 2” Articulation and Transfer Agreement, which would allow students who complete two years at HNU to transfer to PSU to complete two years of course work and receive a bachelor’s degree from PSU. The delegation met with faculty from Early Childhood Education, English, Social Work, and Business.

While on campus, the delegation visited places that are unique to PSU, including the Museum of the White Mountains and the Child Development Center. The delegation also met with Chinese students who are currently studying at PSU to learn about their experiences on campus.

Plymouth State University Awarded $215,000 Grant to Train Faculty in Innovative Teaching Method

Plymouth State University (PSU) was recently awarded nearly $215,000 to support faculty who teach in the general education program as they learn to engage students in the institution’s Integrated Cluster education model. The grant was awarded by the Davis Educational Foundation established by Stanton and Elizabeth Davis after Mr. Davis’s retirement as chairman of Shaw’s Supermarkets, Inc.

An innovative way to help students connect with the learning process, PSU’s Integrated Cluster education model encourages collaboration between disciplines, between faculty and students, and with people and organizations in the broader community. The approach focuses on collaborative, interdisciplinary ‘real world’ projects and activities that extend beyond the walls of the classroom.

“Plymouth State University is broadening the educational experience through our Integrated Clusters model, and supporting instructors with pioneering professional development opportunities is integral to our approach,” said Cathie LeBlanc, Ph.D., Professor of Digital Media and General Education Coordinator, Plymouth State University. “The clusters approach expands the educational experience by giving students unique opportunities to add value to – and have an impact on – the wider world and prepare them for success after graduation.”

PSU’s Integrated Clusters model was hailed by the Davis Educational Foundation as a “bold approach to reimagining the University structure and student experience.” The professional development supported by this grant will include multi-day events led by off-campus experts that focus on a specific aspect of the new educational model, such as project-based learning and developing external audiences. In addition, faculty will participate in shorter professional development activities led by PSU faculty and staff throughout the year.

Plymouth State Nursing Program Receives Accreditation from Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education

Plymouth State University (PSU) announced that its nursing program has received full accreditation by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). The program, which graduated its first class in 2013, was previously accredited by CCNE as a new collegiate program, but is now fully accredited. PSU’s nursing program is a four-year degree program in which students may graduate with a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (BSN).

CCNE is a national accreditation agency that ensures the quality and integrity of baccalaureate, graduate, and residency programs in nursing. Over two-and-a-half days in March 2018, three independent reviewers from CCNE evaluated all aspects of the PSU nursing program, including its curriculum, clinical partner sites and overall program quality, and conducted interviews with university leadership, staff, faculty, students and clinical partners. The CCNE review team noted that PSU’s strong partnerships with hospitals and health centers throughout New Hampshire offer nursing students tremendous opportunities for clinical training.

“This CCNE accreditation marks a significant milestone for our nursing program,” said Jean Coffey, Ph.D., APRN, CPNP, Director, Plymouth State University Nursing Program. “In the relatively short time that this program has been in existence, a lot of groundwork has been done to position PSU for this achievement. We are truly grateful to the numerous people who created a nursing program of the highest caliber, and we are excited to continue innovating and enhancing the program to provide the very best nursing education for our students.”

Coffey, who joined the PSU nursing faculty in January 2018 and became program director in July, credits PSU’s administration, faculty and students for the program’s success. Unlike many collegiate programs throughout the country, PSU’s nursing program has no faculty vacancies, which Coffey says is testament to the quality of the program. The program also shows positive trends in student enrollment, and more than 41 percent of current first-year nursing students are from New Hampshire. Of the 23 nursing program graduates in 2018, 100 percent passed the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) to be licensed as Registered Nurses (RN), and many began their nursing careers at hospitals and other clinical sites in New Hampshire.

The Educational Theatre Collaborative to Bring the Magic of The Little Mermaid to Life

Celebrating its 25th year of staging innovative, entertaining theatrical productions, the Educational Theatre Collaborative (ETC) at Plymouth State University (PSU) will present The Little Mermaid, the beloved Broadway musical from Disney, January 23 to 27 at the Silver Center for the Arts in Plymouth.

The Little Mermaid is a timeless story that I have loved since I was a child,” said Trish Lindberg, Artistic Director, Educational Theatre Collaborative. “I am excited to work with so many wonderful cast and creative team members to recreate the magic of this beautiful story for New Hampshire audiences.”

Based on Hans Christian Andersen’s beloved story, The Little Mermaid is a hauntingly beautiful love story for the ages. Set in a magical kingdom beneath the sea, the beautiful young mermaid, Ariel, longs to leave her ocean home to live in the world above water, and to trade her mermaid tail for human legs. This fishy fable will capture the heart with its irresistible songs, including “Under the Sea,” and “Part of Your World.”

Following ETC’s tradition, more than 100 community members of all ages from across the region will participate in the production as cast and crew. The company will memorize lines, musical numbers, build sets, create costumes and prepare for opening night in just under three weeks.

The Little Mermaid production brings many familiar faces back to the Silver Center stage, including Amy Weston of Meredith as Ariel; Fran Page of Plymouth as Ursula; Joe Casey of Plymouth as Grimsby; Anthony Coppola, Campton Elementary School K-8 Music Director, as Scuttle; Timothy Johnson of Meredith as Flotsam; and Melissa Furbish of Plymouth as Acquata, one of Ariel’s sisters. Sebastian the Crab will be played by Dave Heard, PSU graduate student. Newcomers to ETC include Andrew Kelley as Prince Eric; Jon Roth as King Titan; Forest Hamel as Flounder; and Jagger Reep as Jetsam.

The Educational Theatre Collaborative, a joint venture between Plymouth State University and Plymouth Elementary School, has been recognized for bringing people together in a caring and nurturing environment to create the magic of musical theatre for all ages. The Collaborative received the Moss Hart Award from the New England Theatre Conference, honoring its musical theatre education for the local community.

The Little Mermaid performances will take place January 23 to 26 at 7 p.m. and January 26 and 27 at 1 p.m.

For information about The Little Mermaid, and to purchase tickets, contact the Silver Center for the Arts box office at (603) 535-2787 or (800) 779-3869 or visit www.plymouth.edu/silver-center/tickets/.
